Existential depression is very common amongst gifted individuals. In fact, a wide array of mental and emotional difficulties can be found in many gifted individuals. This all can stem back to grade school, when they were most likely picked on and bullied for being different and “nerdy”.

Sadness and genius – from The Simpsons

Existential depression occurs in gifted students many times due to their acute sensitivity to world issues. Many then place blame on the adult world for not doing enough or anything at all in order to fix the problems that they know and care about. These young students then usually attempt to help fix these problems themselves. When they find out that no matter what they do, their “feeble” attempts as mere children cannot aid in solving the many issues this world has, they withdraw and begin questioning what their purpose in life truly is if they cannot do anything about the problems that they recognize.

It is important for children showing symptoms of existentialism, depression or both to see a counselor immediately, as suicide attempts among creative and highly sensitive youth are frequent according to “A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children.”

Existential depression in gifted children is common due to the basic human need to fit in, and with the high sensitivity to complex issues, these gifted children do not fit in well with a majority of other kids their age. That is why it is important for schools to create groups or clubs for highly intelligent children to participate in. This will show them that they are not alone in their way of thinking among children their own age as many youths who suffer existential depression and are gifted feel trapped in general classrooms where they are not challenged. This sort of interaction is much more important than just having adults engage them in thoughtful conversations, as these gifted children will still see that age gap, and use that to mentally separate themselves from the adults.

Seeing a counselor or psychologist is also important in treating existential depression amongst gifted children. During therapy session, the children will be talked through their anxieties in order to find the true root of them. As many parents know, they do not always get straight answers from their children through direct questions. A good amount of counseling sessions will allow a therapist to find ways into the child’s mind through the carious different conversations that have been had.

While it can be very difficult to prevent existential depression from manifesting in gifted individuals, the treatment, if started early, can be very effective. Psychotherapy along with other activities can help show an existential depressive that their life does in fact have meaning, and that they are not, in fact, alone. These sessions can also help show what needs to be done or changed in order to prevent this emotional ailment from returning. If existential depression in a gifted young person is left unchecked, the results can be disastrous, however.

Many people consider soul searching to be a part of life, but they are not aware of the potential for existential depression. This type of depression arises when a person questions the purpose of their life. They might not be able to find any value in themselves, or the answer they find is not pleasing to them. The result is a depression, in particular existential depression.

Existential depression is not talked about as much as other types, and for this reason there are a lot of people that have not heard about it. However, it is a real kind of depression and its victims go through real suffering. Finding real meaning in neither life nor death, they just sink into a deep pit of darkness. From this type of depression it can be hard to escape, as it calls for a change in belief.

Psychologists believe that a person’s happiness is based not in religion, but comes from the exercise of their own free will. Therefore, finding true meaning in their existence it truly up to them and not dependent on any outside source. When a person is unable to define what gives them happiness, their ability to be happy gets taken away through this condition called existential depression.

Scientists have been unable to find a cure for existential behavior. The treatment for patients that are found to be suffering from existential behavior receive the same treatment that other depression patients get; drugs, psychotherapy, and the like. However, it is possible that there is a better method for the treatment of existential depression.

Existential Depression – The Cure May Not Come From Science

It may be that science has been unsuccessful in issuing a solution to existential depression because of their limited scope. A true cure for existential behavior may not be found in the traditional approaches to discovering the proper treatment for a medical condition, but in something that science cannot grasp due to its very nature.

However, manner of approach is not the only issue that may be limiting the ability to uncover a solution to existential depression, the quantity of approaches may be an issue as well. Existential behavior tends not to receive as much attention as some of the other conditions. Not very many are seeking foe its cure, yet a diverse and broader set of perceptions may shed light into places in this issue that may have persisted unseen.

There may not be as many people suffering from existential depression as there are of those who struggle with other mental health issues, but the condition is serious enough to earn some attention. Existential depression is not something that is easy to live with, no form of depression is. The truth is that every life has a purpose, even though that purpose might not be made quickly clear. Those with existential depression need to realize this for themselves. It is possible for them to recover from this debilitating condition. Life’s purpose serves as an instant existential depression cure.

There are different causes of depression and it varies from one individual to another and what they think about their life or the result of something that might have caused the same. Existential depression is characterized by the individual questioning his survival and thinking about the reason why he is on this earth, finally ending up in despair.

In accordance with existentialism, it is stated that the reason why people sink into misery or depression is not because of any outside agent, god, belief or any deity. Instead it is because humans are free to make their own choices in their life and they are the only ones guilty of any grief or glee in their life. The most important thing is to understand the meaning or why we are living this fast paced lifestyle. It is our duty to judge the major elements that drive our life and it can be anything from work, charity, hobbies, relationships, family, offspring, religion or anything else.

The reason why existential depression occurs is when a person faces or is brought into a situation of death, life or the real meaning of their existence. Mostly they ask the question, what is the real essence of my living? Is it just to work overtime, just stay with the family and then finally make some money and then die? Is everything just over with death without any particular aim? Won’t I be successful in finding someone who would share with me my happiness and sorrows and understand and be with me for my entire life? Is there anyone so? Does God truly care for what I am? This kind of depression can be called as hopeless belief of your life without understand or estimating the real meaning of life.

An individual with existential depression is treated by the clinicians with utmost care in understanding their own life in the way it really is. For this the person needs to dig out their passion in life and it is something many of us realize pretty late. All the questions that come up in your mind often can be noted down and answered after you realize your goal and the love in your life.

The reason existential depression occurs can be any particular event that might have taken place in your life, negligence or can be absolutely nothing at all. Prescriptive medicine is not administered to any individual with existential depression. Instead, he or she is made to reveal and recognize the real essence of life and how wonderful it is outside your mindset.
